I will go through the land of Egypt on this night and strike down every firstborn in the land of Egypt, whether human or animal, and bring judgment on all the gods of Egypt. I am God. The blood will serve as a sign on the houses where you live. When I see the blood I will pass over you—no disaster will touch you when I strike the land of Egypt. Exodus 12:12-13 MSG

Jesus made it quite clear that “in this world [we] will have trouble.”[i] Sickness, death, marital strife, financial insecurity—those afflictions strike seemingly without regard for our plans or the fragility of our hearts.  And when they do, it is so easy to feel that we have been crushed.

So it was for the Israelites.  As a cruel pharaoh beat them down, they witnessed the miracles of God do little to soften this pharaoh’s heart, and they waited in terror for God’s final plague to pass over Egypt.

But God gave them something powerful; something with which even death could not reckon.

The blood.

Though calamity will confront us, we can take heart in the power of Christ’s blood.  Though instability, loss, and pain surround us, we can be assured by its salvation of our souls.

Dear Jesus, thank you for the blood.  Thank you for the protection it offers from disaster.  Help us to cling to the truth of its power more than we cling to our own fallible logic.  When we face trouble, give us the strength to resist despair and to remember that we have already been given the ultimate victory, for through your death and resurrection, we have overcome.
